Reading All-Stars @ HD Cooke

Tubman Reading All-Stars tutor reading with two students

Work alongside your neighbors to change the life of a child in your community. The Reading All-Stars program, brought to you by the Grassroots Education Project, is designed to provide struggling readers with needed one-on-one reading support. We focus on getting students to enjoy reading, because we know they'll do more of it and get better at it as a result. Reading All-Stars students are twice as likely as their peers to become grade proficient in reading. The support you provide is critical to their success.

Reading All-Stars runs every Saturday morning from 10:00am to 12:00pm at HD Cooke Elementary. Volunteers should be prepared to attend regularly, with very few exceptions, for the duration of the school year.

Before volunteering with us as a tutor, you will need to attend one of our volunteer orientations, which are scheduled throughout the year and last approximately two hours. As orientations are scheduled, those dates will be communicated to those that have expressed interest.

All orientations will take place at the school.

If you're concerned about being able to attend every Saturday, please keep the following in mind.

  1. Reading All-Stars is not held during holiday weekends. If students have Friday or Monday off, there is no tutoring that Saturday.
  2. We expect volunteers to have obligations that take them out of town every now and then. We know people have weddings to attend, vacations to take, and family to visit. Don't let that keep you from volunteering.
  3. If you have a friend or a significant other that wants to tutor, you can partner to work with the same student, trading places as needed.
